Helpful Financial Aid Terminology
As you begin the financial aid process, you鈥檒l want to get familiar with these terms:
FAFSA is the form used by the U.S. Department of Education to determine your Student Aid Index (SAI) by conducting a need analysis based on financial information, such as income, assets and other household information.
FAFSA is the application used by nearly all colleges and universities to determine eligibility for federal, state and college-sponsored financial aid, including grants, educational loans and work-study programs.
The Student Aid Index (SAI)
The Student Aid Index (SAI) is an eligibility index number that the College鈥檚 financial aid office uses to determine how much federal student aid you will receive if you attend.
Cost of Attendance
This figure is made up of direct costs and indirect costs.
- Direct costs are the charges that the college will bill you each semester that you are enrolled. These include tuition, fees, and housing and food (if you live in one of the residence halls).
- Indirect costs are expenses that you will incur in addition to direct costs, including books and supplies, transportation costs, personal expenses and a living allowance.
Financial Need
This is the difference between the Cost of Attendance and your SAI. Your SAI is subtracted from the Cost of Attendance, and the result is your financial need.
