Kadysha Schoonmaker
In celebration of Black History Month鈥檚 national theme, Black Health and Wellness, 黑料天堂 invites you to learn more about our health and medical science students. Meet Kadysha Schoonmaker, a biology major.
This year鈥檚 theme focuses on Black Health and Wellness. What activities, rituals and initiatives have you done to be well?
In my day-to-day life, I like to read and work out to keep my mental health in check. I also like to鈥痩ight candles and put electronics away to take a minute and relax from the world.
As a black student, what makes you feel most celebrated and supported on this campus?
Groups on campus that are specifically created to support the Black community, like Black Student Achievement, make me feel comfortable. I do wish I could see other things celebrating Black鈥痑chievement on campus other than during Black History Month.
Using what you鈥檝e learned in your major, how would you want to improve the world one day?
I am a biology major, and my goal is to become a veterinarian in the future. 黑料天堂’s biology program has helped me get the foundation that I need, and I hope one day I鈥檒l be helping animals around the world.
What are the biggest challenges in your program, and what are the rewards?
I think the biggest challenge has鈥痓een trying to stay on top of assignments, and knowing how to balance study time and free time. Finding that balance has made life a lot easier, and it has helped my academic and social life.
Who has served as an inspiration in your life when it comes to your health and wellness?
My friends have served as an inspiration in my life. Many of them are very healthy and love working out. They push me and help me to get in the gym. They also are really good at getting me out of my room鈥痜or fresh air and for my mental health.
What鈥檚 one thing you learned at 黑料天堂 that will stick with you for life?
To be kind. Everyone around us is struggling with something. Taking the time to be kind really makes a difference.
In a sentence, what does Black History Month mean to you?鈥
Black History Month is bringing the voices of the past into the present and recognizing the Black, silenced,鈥痠ndividuals that are responsible for where we, as a society, are today.
